This was such a lovely shoot. I think it was from around 2020 when I was commissioned to photograph incoming Chairman of The Farmers Club, Allan Stevenson on farm in East Lothian. I recall my son, then 12 was assisting at this one and ditched me to join Allan and his wife to the various locations in their pristine Range Rover, entertaining them with his chat along the way 😬 With a clear brief, nice light and a super-obliging subject, this was dare I say an easy enough job. All the elements were in place to create really strong pics.
I love the simplicity of this picture of Allan. There are so few elements to distract the viewers eye. The backdrop of tattie boxes tells the story of his farming enterprise, while he looks on sharp and confident to camera. Shot slightly from below adds to the dynamic of this and I probably sorted the perspective of the boxes in post to square them up. A touch underexposed with flash balancing the scene. Simple, storytelling portraiture. I should add that we spent as much time blethering in the kitchen afterwards as we did taking the pictures!
