Is there anything more majestic than a Highland cow in their natural environment? Yes – a few Highlanders! and a couple of Luings for good measure. Photographed originally for the Irish Farmers Journal (Scotland) a good few years back now, I grabbed this shot on the way to an aquacultural shoot in Oban in the west of Scotland. This one was captured early in the morning with not a lot of light present BUT it kind of suits this low contrast muted scene. Tricky from an exposure POV holding both the light sky and a bit of detail in the shadows. This is really where modern digital cameras excel – along with a good knowledge of exposure. The light dusting of snow on the back hill just adds to the narrative I think.
These ladies gave me their undivided attention for 30 seconds maximum before realising I offered no feed whatsoever, turned and walked away in disgust! This image goes to prove that nice pictures can be made in less than average light – just!
