My Favourite Frames #23

This is an archive shot from the early 1990s. I think it was around December – I was heading into the door on the left, Matthew Gloag & Sons wine shop, to buy my father a bottle of armagnac for Christmas! Creator of the Famous Grouse and a major local employer, I can still remember the open coal fire in the shop and the old-world charm and service.

As with so much aged material, it’s hard to say exactly what made me capture this scene. I think I was drawn to the juxtaposition of street workers, piano movers, and a well-presented lady – all sharing the same space and seemingly oblivious to each other. Not like me to be shooting in colour either – this was probably on the tail end of a wedding film from the weekend!

Sadly, Gloag’s is now gone from Perth. The building became a restaurant for a while but is currently shuttered. We did crack open the armagnac on Christmas morning – and it was bloody good too!
