I’ve been exploring my archive and am delighted to share some of my favourite frames from over 30 years of making pictures.
For more than seven years, I’ve been photographing in Scotland’s aquaculture sector, and some of my most engaging images have come from this work. I particularly love this simple shot of a smolt gently held in a salmon farmer’s hands. To me, it captures the care and attention given throughout the growing process and reflects the tender connection between stock and producer.
The muted palette gives the image a low-key feel, with the fish’s belly as the brightest element drawing the eye. The sheen of water hints at the aquaculture setting and adds subtle specular highlights. It’s a straightforward shot, taken with available light in a short time to avoid stressing the fish-but nonetheless, a beautiful and meaningful picture.
