I am the only person I know that could go on safari and their favourite picture be of a land cruiser! In October 2025 I was very fortunate to receive an assisted place through the Joe Watson Legacy Fund from the British Guild of Agricultural Journalists to attend the IFAJ Congress in Nairobi, Kenya. I found the whole experience to be somewhat mind blowing and came away with a set of pictures that will stay with me for ever. While out there I took advantage of a couple of days safari in the Masai Marra. It’s not something that I’d consider before but it seemed silly going that far and not experiencing it. While I did get some really nice photos, I’d probably not do it again to be honest, quite a lot of it didn’t really sit with me.
However, for 15-30 minutes towards the end of both days the light was like nothing I have ever seen before – the warmth and saturation of the sun setting was beyond words. This then, is probably one of my favourite frames from the two days. Not a lion, not an elephant but an ubiquitous Land Cruiser making it’s way back to camp – shot on a long lens with a diffusion filter (which I use to soften digital files almost exclusively) I love this image – and there has been very little editing done – this is what it was like. Quite simply stunning!
