Ah… the selfie. As ubiquitous now as fish and chips. We’ve all done it – yes, even me (though I still get mildly confused by the mirrored image…)
While most people head on holiday to photograph the sights, I often find myself doing the opposite – capturing tourists and visitors as they interact with them (much to my family’s occasional annoyance). There’s something fascinating about how completely absorbed people become in their mobile phones in a way they rarely do with a traditional stills or video camera.
This frame was taken on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice on the Côte d’Azur during a brief family trip last year. It was a little overcast – so perhaps not quite the “bleu azur” the region is famous for – but beautiful nonetheless.
What I particularly like about this image is the composition: the horizon and foreground sit neatly along the rule of thirds, while the central placement of the group feels, to my eye, just right.
The sun did make an appearance later in the trip, and the quality of light there is incredible. If you haven’t been, I’d thoroughly recommend it.
