My Favourite Frames #15

This one dates from a wee while back. Shot on the stunning Glen Lyon Estate in Highland Perthshire, I was commissioned by Sainsbury’s Magazine to photograph a small group of journalists and food influencers from London as they took part in a deer stalk on the estate.

It was a new experience for me and turned out to be a fascinating, if gruelling, day on the hill. One deer was taken in the morning after a fair old trek, but despite our best efforts in the afternoon we didn’t enjoy the same success. It was one of those assignments where, no matter where the camera was pointed, the landscape seemed to deliver a great image. I documented the entire process – from setting off early in the morning to the deer being taken to the game larder at the end of the day – and came away with a really diverse set of pictures (though not all of them suitable for publication).

This frame was captured on the way back down the hill. Travelling in the lead vehicle, I jumped out quickly to photograph this Defender splashing through a shallow ford. I love the palette of colours in the scene and the sense of movement it gives in what works nicely as a wide establishing editorial shot begging to be used over a spread.
