My Favourite Frames #11

There’s a lot I like about this farming image. Shot in Lincolnshire last year with Jane Craigie Marketing for BASF Nunhems, it’s a simple frame at first glance—but one that tells a story.

I often use selective depth of field to guide the viewer through an image, and this is a good example of that approach. My aim is for your eye to land first on the heroes of the shot—the farmer and agronomist—before taking in the rest of the scene. The leeks come in and out of focus around the subjects, helping frame them within the crop itself. In the background, the tree fills the negative space and subtly reinforces the rural setting—softly out of focus, but still an important part of the story.

The image was shot entirely with natural light. With the sun high behind the subjects, it creates even illumination with a gentle rim light—courtesy of Mother Nature. Walking shots like this are quick to capture and often produce several usable frames from a single setup, from tighter compositions to slightly wider views. This one was captured in less than 30 seconds—simple, effective visual storytelling, and one of my favourite frames.
